Name: Josu√© Garc√≠a

Title: SVO Foundation Board Member; CEO

Company: Santa Clara & San Benito Counties Building & Construction Trades Council

Josué García immigrated out of financial necessity to the United States in 1983 from Durango Mexico where he was born and raised. In the US, he attended adult education evening classes at San Jose High School taking English as a second language.

Mr. García joined the Roofers Union in 1985 where he learned the trade by working as a roofer and taking apprenticeship classes at night. After nine years of working with the tools (as a roofer), Mr. Garcia began volunteering his time as a translator for non-English speaking students who wanted to take roofing classes but did not know the language. Soon after, he began getting paid for his service as a translator.

After a few months of working part time as a translator and apprenticeship instructor, Mr. Garc√≠a ran for the Financial Secretary position at the local roofer‚Äôs union.  At the end of the election, Mr. Garc√≠a was named the first immigrant to be Financial Secretary-Treasurer, a position that he held for over than seven years.

While working for the Roofers Union, he became the first Latino Immigrant to hold the position of Secretary-Treasurer for Western States Regional Council of Roofers while at the same time working as Organizer for the International Union of Roofers and Waterproofers (also the first Latino immigrant in that position).

The SVO Foundation is The SVO's line of business, specifically focused on making a local impact in the areas of education, workforce development, civic entrepreneurship, leadership, volunteerism and philanthropy.
