SAN JOSE – Buddy’s San Jose Music in the Park presented by Metro Newspapers features legends of reggae, R&B and Latin rock headlining ticketed shows in Plaza de Cesar Chavez

The 29th season includes:

  • June 22:  Tony! Toni! Ton√©! (R&B)
  • July 12:  Toots & The Maytals (reggae)
  • Aug. 3: Third World and Jordan T (reggae co-headliners)
  • Aug. 24:  Malo (Latin)

Shows begin at 5:30 p.m. at Plaza de Cesar Chavez on Market Street in the center of downtown San Jose.

Advance tickets are $15 per adult and free for 12-under with paid admission.  Tickets and information are available at  Day-of-the-event admission is $20 per adult.

Buddy‚Äôs Music in the Park is presented by Metro Newspapers and produced by the San Jose Downtown Association.  The events are supported by the City of San Jose.

Friday, June 22 - Tony! Toni! Toné!

Tony! Toni! Ton√©! Splashed out of Oakland with two albums in 1988 and 1990 that spawned several R&B hits, including: "Little Walter,‚Äù "Feels Good,"  In 2006, D‚ÄôWayne Wiggins and Timothy Christian Riley regrouped along with their cousin, Amar Khalil performing lead vocals.

June 22 Opener: No Water After Midnight (previously known as So Timeless) from San Jose - hip-hop-infused jazz and funk classics.


Thursday, July 12 - Toots & the Maytals

Formed in the early 1960s, the Maytals are one of the best-known ska and rocksteady vocal groups and record holder for most number-one songs in Jamaica (31 #1 songs). Frontman Toots Hibbert, named one of the 100 Greatest Singers by Rolling Stone. Originally a ska, rocksteady group, Toots & The Maytals actually dubbed the genre with their 1968 hit “Do the Raggay.” They have been nominated for five Grammy Awards between 1981 and 2013, winning best Reggae Album of the Year for 2004’s True Love.

July 12 Opener:  Saritah, born in South Korea, reared musically in Perth, Australia -- reggae and soul.  

Friday, August 3 – Third World with Jordan T. (Double Headliner)

Third World:  Celebrating 43 years, Third World is one of Jamaica's most consistently popular crossover acts, mixing in elements of R&B, funk, pop, and rock and, later on, dancehall and rap into reggae-fusion. Nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, hits include ‚ÄúNow That We Found Love‚Äù,‚Äù96 Degrees in the Shade‚Äù and ‚ÄúTry Jah Love‚Äù).

Jordan T:  With a growing audience of over 2.5 million streams on Spotify alone, Hawaiian  Jordan T. is no stranger to the global reggae touring circuit, and continues to win over fans with his energetic performances and blend of island reggae fusion.

Friday, August 24 - Malo

Latin rock/soul/funk band Malo formed in San Francisco by ex-members of bands the Malibus and Naked Lunch. Malo make its mark led by vocalist Arcelio Garcia and guitarist Jorge Santana (brother of Carlos Santana). Their debut self-titled album in 1972 featured “Nena," "Cafe," and “Suavecito,” which became a low-rider classic.

Malo's current lineup includes:  Arcelio Garcia - Lead Vocals; Pete Rodriguez ‚Äì Trumpet/Trombone; Daniel Cervantez - Keys; Jack Musgrove ‚Äì Trumpet/flugelhorn; Brian Beukelman - Trumpet; Marcos Castillo - Congas; Shadow Garza - Bass; Paul Benavides - guitar; Gilbert Ross - Timbales; David George - Drums; and Justin Rossetti ‚Äì Lead guitar.

Ramiro Amador, bass; David George, drums; Gabriel Manzo, lead guitar; Jay Rossette, 2nd lead guitar;; Frank Bailey, lead trumpet; and Tony Menjivar, congas / timbales. Another addition to the current Malo is Arcelio’s son, Octaviano, an excellent singer and performer in his own right.

Aug. 24 Opener:  Orquesta Latin Heat, a dynamic Bay Area salsa band featuring fiery vocals and rhythms - authentic Latin percussion and a swinging horn section.
