What the Open Space Authority Loves About San Jose in 2018

Written by Marc Landgraf, External Affairs Manager, Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority

As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary Year, the Open Space Authority has many reasons to fall in love with San Jose all over again. We began with a grassroots effort by citizen activists wanting to protect San Jose and its surrounding area’s important natural resources. Support by the city of San Jose for Measure Q has provided the Authority further opportunity to fulfill that mission by enabling us to expand public access to nature in and around our urban communities, protect important agricultural lands, and maintain our open space preserves for public enjoyment.

Here are some of our favorite reasons to fall in love with San Jose all over again:

1.     Bill's Backyard: Bridge to Nature

As a recipient of the first Measure Q Urban Open Space Grant funds, the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose was able to complete their newest exhibit. An outdoor play space that gives kids the chance to explore the outdoors by climbing, building, digging, and getting their hands dirty in a safe and authentic way. Many families don’t have access to nature parks and open space and Bill’s Backyard is that bridge to nature, breaking down barriers and opening doors for children to experience the joy of unstructured outdoor play and connecting families to nature.

2.     Spina Farms

Located on the southern edge of San Jose, Spina Farms offers visitors a chance to purchase locally grown produce year-round. You can also enjoy seasonal offerings like the pumpkin patch in October and Christmas trees in December. Spina Farms sources their produce from farmers in Santa Clara County’s 24,000 acres of farmland, which generates 8,100 jobs and $830 million in economic input. The Authority is proud to work on initiatives like the Santa Clara Valley Agricultural Plan, that aims to protect the remaining farmland in the County, so farmstands like Spina Farms can continue to thrive.

3.     That view from Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve

On a clear day you can see for miles from the parking lot at Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve. Just above Alum Rock Park in San Jose, the view offers a chance to see the San Francisco Bay, the Lick Observatory, or across the valley floor to the Santa Cruz Mountains. You don’t have to explore further, but Sierra Vista has family-friendly multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, or horse-back riding year-round.

The Open Space Authority wants you to experience nature and everything it offers, all you need to do is come discover it! Visit our website to learn more or sign up to receive our monthly event calendar.

The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority conserves the natural environment, supports agriculture and connects people to nature, by protecting open spaces, natural areas, and working farms and ranches for future generations. We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary Year with special events all year long, join us!
