San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce Strive San Jose Career Pathways Liaison to the East Side Union High School District Eddie Truong was recently appointed to the Franklin McKinley Children‚Äôs Initiative steering committee.

The Franklin McKinley Children‚Äôs Initiative (FMCI) is a collaboration of partner organizations working in the Santee Neighborhood in East San Jose. FMCI is a community effort to support children from cradle to career through: community schools, safe and strong neighborhoods, and economic development. FMCI works collaboratively with parents, community leaders, educators, and businesses toward sustaining an environment where children and adults thrive.

“I’m so honored to serve on the Steering Committee of the Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative, an anti-poverty organization working on a cradle-to-college approach to uplift families in the Santee Neighborhood,” Truong said. “The San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce is a partner in this effort to promote economic development and to improve the quality of life of San Jose residents.”

FMCI currently works in partnership with various agencies in order to combat crime rates, gangs, and provide resources such as summer and afterschool program, a community garden, and ESL classes. Partner organizations include: the City of San Jose, Santa Clara County Office of Education, Franklin McKinley School District, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, and the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce is a partner with FMCI and is represented on the FMCI Steering Committee, which provides resources and direction on their organizational priorities. The SJSV Chamber is working with FMCI partner agencies to identify public policy alignment on early learning issues.

Through Strive San Jose—the SJSV Chamber’s workforce development program—there are also opportunities to identify effective business to school partnerships that can help break the cycle of poverty in the Santee neighborhood through paid internship programs, job shadows, and career days. The SJSV Chamber continues to provide public policy leadership on these issues and more.
