The silicon valley organization's President & CEO Matt Mahood MC'd the City of San Jose's 6th Annual Summit of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Friday, May 5.

"Truley, small business, although we have giant industry, giant companies here, small business is the backbone of our local economy, our downtown and our local neighborhoods; even here in Silicon Valley," Mahood told the crowd.

He shared a few stats around the impact of small business, including:

  • California has the highest number of small businesses in the country, with more than 3.6 million
  • California has the highest number of small business employees, with more than 6.4 million
  • In San Jose, 60% of all our businesses are considered small business‚Äîabout 56,000
  • More than 80% of The SVO's 1,400 members are considered small businesses

The event was held as part of National Small Business Week, an effort put on annually by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

From the SBA website:

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness.

Speakers at the May 5 San Jose event included:

  • San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo
  • SBA Mark Quinn
  • Bruce Knopf, Director, Santa Clara County Office of Asset and Economic Development
  • Trami Cron, Owner & Founder, Chopsticks Alley
  • Damien Hooper-Campbell, Chief Diversity Officer, eBay
