San Jose is taking off.

It's been nearly 20 years since local leaders and advocates such as ourselves and our partners had the foresight to ask the public to invest in its transportation corridor.

The passage of 2000's Measure A, is a 30-year half cent sales tax devoted to specified public transit capital improvement projects and operations. This investment by the people of San Jose helped transform this city into an integral connection between Silicon Valley, the greater Bay Area  and the rest of the world.

This investment included many things, but most notably the extension of BART to San Jose, and connections between BART, Caltrain and VTA  light rail with Silicon Valley's airport--Mineta San Jose International Airport.

Fast-forward to 2018 and San Jose is at the edge of complete transformation with the proposed development of the Diridon Station Area. All these improvements and investments into connecting San Jose's core to the greater city and its neighbors, a fundamental focus of our organization's advocating efforts, have brought national attention to the 10th largest city in the country.

Global companies, Google included, have taken notice and are vying to plant their flags in our great city.

So when the San Jose City Council approved the formation of a key advisory committee to oversee future development in the Diridon Station Area, The SVO was pleased to be included in this next stage of San Jose's transformation.

The Station Area Advisory Group or SAAG is made up of more than 35 neighborhood, community and business groups that will meet every three weeks for at least four months to offer feedback to the City Manager's office, as the City continues its negotiations with Google.

The SVO's President & CEO Matt Mahood has tapped our Executive Vice President Madison Nguyen to participate on behalf of The SVO. Her previous experience as Vice Mayor of San Jose will offer Madison a unique perspective on the issues this area faces and how to better align business and community needs for the benefit of the city.
