San Jose, Calif—The Silicon Valley Organization is proud to announce that through a partnership between its Strive San Jose initiative and San José Unified School District, it will be connecting 15 high school students with local architectural firm Steinberg Hart for an opportunity to put what they’ve learned in the classroom to work.

“San Jose is the Heart of Silicon Valley for many reasons but above all, because of the talented workforce that calls it home,” said Matt Mahood, The Silicon Valley Organization President & CEO. “Strive San Jose’s Job Shadow Days offer our up-and-coming talent—our local students—an opportunity to see the Valley’s diverse jobs first-hand as well as interact with local professionals who can better inform their career path.”

Pioneer High School students will be headed downtown to Steinberg Hart where they will get hands-on learning opportunities to design a downtown high-rise with the use of virtual reality tools and the expertise of the architects at Steinberg Hart.

“As a long-standing, active member the San Jose educational community, we are happy to offer San Jose Unified students a glimpse of the work that we do as architects and how architectural professionals like our Steinberg Hart team can act a catalyst for social and environmental change in our own city,” said Katia McClain, AIA, DBIA, LEED AP BD+A, Steinberg Hart Managing Principal for Northern California. “This is not only an opportunity to further the development of future designers, architects, and construction professionals, but it is also part of what’s at the heart of our firm’s mission. As citizen architects, we lead by example and encourage other members of the design and construction industry to be a part of something bigger, engaging and empowering the local communities we serve.”

This career opportunity is part of Strive San Jose’s Job Shadow Days, which has provided an introductory career exploration experience to 150 high school students from San José Unified School District since 2017. The students gain an understanding of the workplace by participating in hands-on activities that mimic real-life work responsibilities. Previous employer participants include Reel Eagle Studios, So Gold Marketing, DuGood Creative, San Jose Giants, DMC Studio MACLA, and 360 Payments.

“We’re proud to partner with Strive San Jose to offer this unique opportunity for our students to gain in-depth experience with modern design and state-of-the-art technology,” said San José Unified Superintendent Nancy Albarrán. “Our thanks go out to Steinberg Hart for opening their doors and taking students behind the scenes of a Silicon Valley industry leader.”

As we face the greatest series of crises in our lifetime – a global pandemic and the deepest economic recession since the great recession – we must have the people’s choice, an elected Accountable Mayor, be directly responsible for the city.
