Unprecedented Partnership Translates Into 41 Paid Summer Internships for East Side Union High School Students

The San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Strive San Jose program is proud to announce that through a partnership with East Side Union High School DistrictWork2Future Foundation and the SJSV Chamber, 41 high school students will be placed in paid internships this summer—more than doubling the school district’s previous internship placements.

“This is the Silicon Valley approach to problem-solving and innovation in the workforce development space,” said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. “By bringing together the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, the East Side Union High School District, and the Work2Future Foundation, we are developing a pipeline between resource-starved neighborhoods and the critical jobs that we need to move San Jose forward. My office and SJ Works will be proud partners in this effort to place hundreds of youth, from gang-impacted neighborhoods, into good-paying jobs to support this unprecedented partnership and to sustain San Jose in the years to come.”

On June 1516 and 17, 41 students from ESUHSD’s career pathways program will participate in soft-skills workshops at Silver Creek High School, learn about their personal brands at LinkedIn and then be interviewed and hired for their paid summer internships at the SAP Center.

“These internships expose our students to real-world experiences in their chosen field of studies and provide opportunities to network with working professionals in that career path,” said Chris D. Funk, East Side Union High School District Superintendent. “Students will learn best practices in the workplace through a paid internship program and connect what they learn in the classroom to the work being performed at the employer’s work site. In doing so, the East Side Union High School District is committed to providing a career-relevant educational experience to our students and to aligning school curriculum to current workforce needs.”

Strive San Jose is a workforce development program working to address the skilled workforce shortage crisis through partnerships between industry and schools. The collaboration unites the SJSV Chamber and the ESUHSD to provide local students with career exposure and preparation opportunities like paid internships, mentorships, and career days. The program also works to ensure that industry expertise informs curriculum development to improve career pathways.

About Work2Future

The work2future Foundation is a nonprofit workforce development agency providing career advising, vocational training, and job placement services to over 4,000 Santa Clara County job seekers annually within the work2future Job Centers. They will provide career-counseling serves for the Strive San Jose interns and serve as the employer of record for Strive San Jose interns. It currently operates the San Jose Works program in partnership with the City of San Jose in addition to the County of Santa Clara’s Summer Employment Program for Foster Youth.
