2017 leadership san jose: Kim Castaneda

Kim Castaneda

Name: Kim Castaneda

Company: Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano

Kim grew up in the South Bay and spent most of her adult life in the East and North Bay.  Prior to her current role as Development Director of The Health Trust she was the Regional Development Director for Volunteers of America in the Bay Area.

It was her current role as Development Director that brought Kim back to the South Bay.  She was drawn to The Health Trust’s mission to build health equity in Silicon Valley and their unique role as funder, service provider and advocate.

Kim graduated San Jose State University with a degree in Hospitality Management, a minor in business, she wanted to be an event/conference planner for the growing tech companies at the time.  It was when she interned with the Development Director at Big Brothers/Big Sisters Silicon Valley that her career direction changed.  She was so inspired by what she saw that she couldn’t turn back.

Right out of college she became the first Executive Director at Career Closet, later had a family and moved north to raise her son.  During that time Kim could not let go of her passion for social change, she helped start the first Boys & Girls Club in her town and the Recreation Foundation to support Parks & Rec in her city.  She continued to sit on Boards and volunteer with organizations focused on her two personal passions youth and women’s rights. Kim credits her mom for her passion/obsession with community.  She would remind her and her brother that we are more than just our family that we are part of a greater community and we must always watch out for our neighbor.

Every day she feels honored that being a Development Director is her job, she gets to see the best in people every day and fortunate to witness life transformations on a regular basis.  This work has changed her life forever.
