On behalf of The Silicon Valley Organization (The SVO), we are writing to support San Jose Water Company’s (SJWC) General Rate Case Application No. 18-01-004 and request for increased water rates to maintain a safe, reliable water supply throughout Silicon Valley. By way of background, we are the Silicon Valley’s premier business advocacy organization representing 1,400+ companies that employ nearly 300,000 workers and we represent our membership as the region’s largest Chamber of Commerce.
The SVO believes that a reliable water supply is essential to Silicon Valley’s economy and to continue supporting business success throughout the region. A safe and reliable water service is the foundation for public health protection, economic development, and a high quality of life. Many water system components such as pipes, wells, and tanks have reached the end of their useful lives and require replacement through increased infrastructure improvements. Therefore, additional investments in the regional water system are necessary to ensure customers can continue receiving high quality water that our community relies on. SJWC requires a fair rate structure that will allow them to both operate essential services and continue making investments in our water infrastructure.
In the past decade, SJWC has invested over $1 billion in water system improvements that was made possible through a fair rate of return. This fair return will allow SJWC to attract the necessary capital to fund water infrastructure improvements. In addition, these water infrastructure investments also create thousands of jobs benefitting our local economy. It is clear that a fair return will allow SJWC to create a win-win opportunity for our community through increased job opportunities and to replace critical infrastructure for high quality water service delivery.
We urge you to support SJWC’s rate request to continue to deliver safe, high quality, and reliable water service at fair and reasonable rates. I
