Santa Clara, Calif.— Every five years small businesses must renew their “Fictitious Business Name” with the County. It is not a complicated procedure. It costs $40. Yet small businesses in our County are receiving notices from at least one company saying they will do the same job – for $150.
Although the letter looks like official government correspondence, it is actually a commercial solicitation from a private company that has no connection to any government agency. Services that send such an offer must disclose that they have no association with a government agency.
Instead of paying a company for this service, businesses can easily find a fictitious business statement on their own with the Clerk-Recorder’s Office. For small businesses in Santa Clara County, please visit the Clerk-Recorder’s website here.
